Cyclist, 36, killed by truck identified

A cyclist who died after being hit by a truck in Nanaimo has been identified as 36-year-old Norman Jack Ellison.

The Nanaimo man was riding his bicycle on Albert Street near Pine Street when he was hit by a Nanaimo Regional Transit bus about 4:45 p.m. Monday.

Ellison was taken to hospital but suffered severe head injuries and died later that night.

Witnesses told police the cyclist was on the wrong side of the road and was not wearing a helmet. He was also reported to have been riding on the sidewalk before hitting the bus.

The B.C. Coroners Service and Nanaimo RCMP are investigating the death but no charges are pending. — Times Colonist
