VANCOUVER - The lawyer of a man facing 12 charges following a mass stabbing at a Vancouver apartment building says his client is despondent and depressed.

Looking confused and wearing a cast on his lower right arm, Jerome Bonneric made a brief court appearance in Vancouver on Monday.

The 33-year-old Bonneric has been charged with four counts of aggravated assault, four counts of assault with a weapon, three counts of common assault and one count of assaulting a police officer.

Lawyer Bob Bellows says his client will likely be held for 30 days for a psychiatric assessment that will determine if he is not criminally responsible because of mental illness.

Seven residents and one police officer were injured in a highrise building in the city's West End during the attack last Thursday night.

Two victims who were attacked are still in the hospital, both are women and one is in serious condition. (CKNW/News1130)
