Major B.C. roads open again after closures caused by snow and avalanche threat

VANCOUVER - The two major highways linking the B-C south coast to the interior are carrying traffic again after being closed by heavy snow and the threat of avalanches.

The Trans-Canada Highway through the Fraser Canyon north of Hope was closed for most of the day Wednesday before traffic resumed.

The Coquihalla Highway between Hope and Merritt was also cleared for traffic after being closed for about 12 hours.

Bob Gilowski of VSA Highway Maintenance says parts of the route were smothered in 75 centimetres of snow in the latest storm, and driving conditions remain treacherous.

Several other highways around the province were plagued by avalanche threats and freezing rain, which followed a major snow storm that rolled across the southern section of the province on Tuesday.

The storm also brought heavy rain and strong winds to coastal areas.
