An elderly driver having a heart attack in Sooke Thursday morning lost control of his pickup truck and drove over an embankment.
The crash occurred at the corner of Tara Place and Rhodonite Drive, just behind the Sooke fire hall, said chief Steve Sorensen.
A bystander saw the driver slumped over and twice tried to remove the keys from the ignition of the moving vehicle but the truck sped off both times, mowing through juniper bushes and finally dropping about three metres from the road. The truck crashed into a house, knocking a post out from under the home’s deck.
“He was in full cardiac arrest when I got there,” Sorensen said.
CPR was given to the man, who appeared to be in his late 60s or early 70s, and a defibrillator was used on him at the scene before an ambulance took him to Royal Jubilee Hospital. His condition could not be verified at press time.
