A Courtenay man got up close and personal with an orca Saturday night.
When Ken Heinrich and his two daughters spotted a pod of killer whales breaching in the waters off Gartley Beach, they grabbed their cameras and hopped into their kayaks to get a better look.
“We were simply drifting when the pod came towards us and at one point circled around to the shore side of us. The most amazing animal experience of my life,’ Heinrich wrote on YouTube posting. “These incredible creatures were wonderful to watch. Tail slapping, breaching (including one extremely close breach) and just cruising until they slowly just continued on down the straight to their next destination.”
One of Heinrich’s daughters snapped a photo as an orca breached mere feet in front of his kayak.
