B.C. RCMP officer handed suspended sentence after assault conviction

RICHMOND, B.C. - An RCMP officer in Richmond, B.C., has been convicted of assault, but he won't be going to jail.

A provincial court judge in Richmond has handed Const. Inderpal Bal a suspended sentence and placed him on six months probation for the incident during an arrest on Jan. 26, 2012.

Bal was originally charged with assault causing bodily harm but was convicted of the lesser count.

Surrey RCMP recommended charges last July after an investigation launched when fellow officers alerted a supervisor to concerns about the arrest.

At the time, Mounties say the victim required hospital treatment, but no further details were provided.

An internal RCMP code of conduct review was also carried out, but the force has not released any information about that probe. (CKNW)
