A Victoria police dog tracked down a suspected car thief this morning.

The Victoria Police canine unit was on routine patrol early this morning when it spotted a man driving a truck with a smashed-out window, said Victoria Police Staff Sgt. Darren Laur.

The man was ordered to pull over to the curb but as soon as he did so, he bolted. Unlucky for him, the police dog on his heels was faster than the suspect and after a “lengthy track” a man was arrested and charged with “possession of a stolen vehicle.”

The incident occurred at about 2:30 a.m. in the 2700-block of Hamilton Road in the Oaklands area of Victoria. Police were still on the scene in the early morning hours collecting evidence in the area.
