EDMONTON -- Let's face it, the Vancouver Canucks are an overrated bunch of underachievers.
Just look at what they accomplished this weekend. In a pair of games against the Toronto Maple Leafs and Edmonton Oilers, all the Canucks did was win by a combined score of 11-4 After a 6-2 triumph early Saturday night over the Maple Leafs, the Canucks began a six-game road trip Sunday night with a 5-2 decision over the Oilers at Rexall Place.
The Canucks are 10-0-2 in their last 12 games, which apparently is not good enough.
Earlier Sunday, Hockey Night in Canada released the results of its players poll. One of the questions asked players to name the NHL's most overrated team. The Canucks were the winner, with 24 per cent of the players who responded naming the Canucks.
Maybe they were all Boston Bruins. Or Chicago Blackhawks.
Speaking of polls, Sports Illustrated had its own player survey last week in which the Sedins were named as the easiest players to intimidate.
Daniel and Henrik didn't look too scared this weekend as they combined for 12 points in the two games.
Sunday night's win kept the Canucks two points back of the Western Conference-leading Detroit Red Wings, who beat the San Jose Sharks 3-2 earlier Sunday for their 23rd straight win. The Wings probably placed second in the overrated poll.
The Canucks got off to another one of their patented fast starts, opening scoring for the 40th time in 59 games this season. This one only took 53 seconds.
Henrik Sedin was left all alone in front and Daniel found him with a pass out of the corner. With Nikolai Khabibulin caught out of position, Henrik had an empty net to shoot at and didn't miss for his 13th of the season.
The Canucks took advantage of a 5-on-3 power play to take a 2-0 lead at 6:43 of the first. Defenceman Sami Salo snuck into the slot from the left point and converted a pass from Henrik Sedin for his eighth goal of the season.
Vancouver thought it had a 3-0 lead when Manny Malhotra put a rebound off a Max Lapierre shot past Khabibulin with 45 seconds left in the first. The puck went in off Malhotra's skate and the play was reviewed. Despite the fact there did not appear to be any distinct kicking motion, the goal was disallowed.
The Oilers used that break to grab the momentum for much of the second period. After being outshot 17-5 in the first period, the Oilers held the Canucks without a shot for more than 13 minutes to start the second.
Edmonton pulled to within a goal at 1:08 of the second when Shawn Horcoff put a shot from close range between the legs of Cory Schneider. Oiler defenceman Tom Gilbert started the play when he kept the puck in at the blue line and found Ryan Smyth near the crease. Smyth then delivered a nice pass to Horcoff, who converted it for his 11th of the season.
But two goals 1:39 apart late in the second put the Canucks back in full control of the game. Kevin Bieksa used a nice screen in front by Dale Weise to put a shot from the right point past Devan Dubnyk, who replaced Khabibulin to start the second. The goal, Bieksa's seventh of the season, came at the 15:01 mark.
Chris Higgins made it 4-1 at 16:40, converting a Jannik Hansen pass from the slot for his 11th of the season.
But the Oilers got one back before the period expired. Magnus Paajarvi wired a one-timer off an Alex Hemsky pass past Schneider at the 18:25 mark to make it 4-2.
Daniel Sedin restored Vancouver's three-goal lead 33 seconds into the third period when he beat Dubnyk glove side from the slot after a pass from Alex Burrows.
The Canucks haven't lost a game in regulation since Jan. 15. Schneider is now 13-5-0 this season.
ICE CHIPS: Weise returned to the lineup after a five-game absence. He replaced Byron Bitz, who was experiencing hip soreness. . .The Canucks stayed overnight in Edmonton and will fly to Nashville on Monday. They meet the Predators on Tuesday night. . .Oilers coach Tom Renney missed his third game with a concussion suffered after taking a puck to the head in practice earlier this month. Associate coach Ralph Krueger filled in, while Renney watched from the press box. . .Khabibulin apparently suffered a groin injury in the first period. . .The Canucks are now 25-0-0 when leading after two periods this season and now have 20 road wins.
