Sprinklers extinguish Langford condo fire

Water damage displaces several tenants of four-storey building

The sprinkler system in a Langford condo extinguished flames Sunday afternoon before fire crews arrived, but residual water damage displaced several other tenants in the four-storey building.

Smoke was escaping from a second-floor suite when Langford fire arrived at 866 Brock Ave. shortly after 1:30 p.m.

Once inside, it was clear the sprinkler system had kept the fire under control and extinguished the flames, according to Lt. Ryan Hyland.

Although several other tenants in the building were displaced by water damage, Hyland stressed the fire could have caused a lot more damage if not for the sprinklers.

The tenant in the unit where the fire happened was not home at the time. No injuries were reported.

The kitchen sustained the most damage, but Hyland said the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

No damage estimate was available Sunday night.
