House Beautiful Photos: Heritage love affair

This classic 1916 house overlooking Beacon Hill Park stood empty for six years while its owner lived next door, lovingly undertook a painstaking and extensive ronvation.

The 1916 house is set well back on the lot because there was originally a smaller house in front. When the family outgrew it, they built larger one behind and demolished the first, leaving a generous lawn with circular walkway.

A plaque attests to the heritage designation of the house.
The lower front porch had to be rebuilt as a main post underneath had completely rotted away. The garden blooms with old roses, camellias and rhodos.
An office by the front door may be small but it has beautiful stained glass windows and views of the park.
Double French doors open onto the living room from the front hall.

Graham Garmon bought the house in 2000 and spent six years lovingly restoring it. The new owners call him its co-curator.
Interior walls were painted a bright white by the new owners, but all the woodwork is original and has never seen a paintbrush.
Above the dining room sideboard’s leaded cabinets are stained glass works of art, now protected by another layer of glass behind.

The owners chose this room as their master bedroom because it has two large window seats, and the potential for an ensuite. An alcove on the far left wall backs onto a spacious hall closet, making it an ideal spot for the expansion.
Both dining and living rooms have long, cedar-lined window seats.
