Woman killed crossing road in dark and rain in Central Saanich

An elderly woman was struck by a car and killed Thursday evening while crossing a dark stretch of Mount Newton Cross Road in the pounding rain.

Central Saanich police, fire and B.C. Ambulance rushed to the scene in the 2100-block of Mount Newton Cross Road, across from the Saanich Peninsula Hospital, around 6:10 p.m.

The victim was transported a short distance to the hospital but died shortly after.

Police spokeswoman Cpl. Janis Jean said the woman was wearing dark clothing and crossing in the middle of the dark road during “torrential downpour” conditions when struck.

Visibility for the driver was limited, Jean said, and investigators do not believe speed or alcohol were factors, so charges are unlikely.

The lone male driver, who Jean said “was clearly traumatized by this as well,” is co-operating with police.

Police are not releasing the woman's name until next of kin are notified.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact Cpl. Dave Hodgson at 250-652-4441.
