BOND, Frank September 12, 1916 - February 1, 2010 Born in Milton of Balgonie, Scotland, Frank died peacefully after a full and wonderful life.
His family emigrated to Canada when he was six, and settled in the coal-mining town of Blakeburn, BC. Like other young men who came of age during the Depression, he tried his hand at many jobs throughout the country, and later joined the Army, rising to the rank of Lieutenant, during World War II.
While waiting to be sent overseas from Halifax, he met Norma Baltzer. When he returned to Canada in the spring of 1945, they married and travelled to BC where they raised a family of four daughters. They moved many times over the years, but settled in Victoria in 1960 where Frank later became the Manager of CHEK TV. After retirement, Frank had time to indulge his love of golf at the Cedar Hill Golf Course, and together with Norma, travelled widely, grew beautiful flower and vegetable gardens and spent time with their five grandsons. Though his health had declined in recent years, he accepted life's changes with grace and patience and was always appreciative of the many kindnesses he was shown. He was witty and wise to his last day. Frank was predeceased by Norma, his wife of 63 years, in January of 2009 and by his oldest daughter, Carol, in 2007. He was also predeceased by his brother Jim, sister Lorna, and sons-in-law Bill, Ken and Jack. He is lovingly remembered by his daughters Sharon, Barb (Ray) and Jan (Lance), grandsons Steven, Brian (Kim), Scott, Keith and David, as well as six great-grandchildren, brother Bob, sister Neen (Bobby), brother-in law Harvey (Darlene), sisters-in-law Greta, Sally and Bonnie, as well as many nieces and nephews. The family is very grateful for all the help and support from staff at the Cridge Assisted Living facility where he and Norma lived from 2006 - 2009, workers from Beacon Home Support who always went over and above the call of duty and the wonderful staff at Veterans' Health Centre, Broadmead Lodge. Thanks also to the staff at the Gorge Road Hospital for their considerate care during the past six weeks.
A service of remembrance will be held at 2:00 on Friday, February 12th at 77 Gorge Road West (Cedar Shores condominiums, Recreation/Rental Centre Building between Wascana and Earl Grey Streets). PETERSEN, Barbara Victoria March 11, 1920 - February 4, 2010 Born in Westlock, Alberta, Barbara passed away peacefully at the Saanich Peninsula Hospital, after a short illness. Predeceased by her husband Bernard Petersen in 1993 and her sister Mary Simmons in 2007, she is survived by her brother Ken Travers (Glenn), brother-in-law Geoff Simmons and many special nieces and nephews, whom she affectionately referred to as "her family." Barb and Bern were married in Lethbridge, Alberta in 1963 and spent many happy years travelling in their RV plus extended trips to Europe to visit Bern's family in Denmark.
They greatly enjoyed fishing trips to Beaver Mines in the Alberta foothills and visits to the West Coast. Barb was an ardent fisherman and her quick eye and lightening reflex caught many an unwary trout sniffing her baited hook. She was also an avid Canuck hockey fan. Barb moved to Sidney, B.C. in 1996 and lived on her own until entering the hospital. When she reluctantly gave up her car she purchased a scooter and "scooted" around Sidney to attend to all her business.
She was an active organized senior to the very end. Barb was born with an indomitable spirit and despite a severe hearing disability from early youth she was always upbeat and cheerful. She was a very special lady and had a positive and encouraging influence on all who knew her, particularly her nieces and nephews.
Special thanks to the Mt. Newton Centre staff, also the doctors and wonderful nurses at the hospital who took such good care of her. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to the Mount Newton Centre or the Saanich Peninsula Hospital foundation. A private family service will be held.
