A convicted pedophile from Langford died yesterday, the day before he was to be sentenced for molesting four children in the mid-1970s and in 1999.
Wayne Staull, 67, a former correctional supervisor at William Head prison, was scheduled to be sentenced today in Western Communities court.
West Shore RCMP found a 67-year-old man dead in his home in the 900-block of Glenview Place yesterday around 3:30 p.m. after being called by a relative.
The man died suddenly from natural causes, said spokesman Cpl. Gerry Sutherland. He said there were no signs of trauma to the body and police have no reason to suspect foul play.
Police would not release the deceased’s name but his lawyer Roger Batchelor confirmed it was Staull.
Batchelor said Staull suffered from post traumatic stress disorder from his work as a jailer, depression and heart problems. Batchelor said he was planning to ask Judge Robert Higinbotham to consider Staull’s old age and fragile health condition when making his sentence today.
“He met with me the day before [he died] and we were planning his submissions,” Batchelor said. “It came as a big surprise.”
Staull’s trial started in August, but he suffered a stroke and went to hospital after the first day of testimony, which delayed proceedings until Nov. 17.
He was found guilty of sexual interference and indecent assault involving four children aged 11- to 15-years-old who lived in his neighbourhood. The incidents took place between 1975 and 1999 but he was not convicted until November of this year.
Earlier this year Staull pleaded guilty but successfully changed his plea to not guilty the day he was set to be sentenced.
The B.C. Coroner Service is investigating the cause of death.
