MD in 'hit' case loses licence

The doctor charged last November with trying to arrange a "hit" on his business partner had his medical licence suspended in Washington state this week.

Mike Farrell, attorney for the Washington State Department of Health's Medical Assurance Committee, confirmed the department has suspended the licence for Dr. Michael Mockovak, 51.

Mockovak was charged in Washington with two counts of criminal solicitation to commit murder in connection with a plot to kill Dr. Joseph King and Brad Klock, a former hockey player originally from Port Alberni.

King and Mockovak are co-founders of Clearly Lasik, which has laser-eye-surgery clinics in Victoria, Vancouver, Edmonton and several U.S. cities. They are also former brothers-in-law.

The charges launched an investigation in both Washington and Oregon , where Mockovak was licensed to practise.

On Jan. 15, Mockovak surrendered his Oregon licence as part of an agreement made during that state's investigation.

Farrell said that any time a Washington state-licensed physician is prohibited from practising in another jurisdiction, the Health Department will move to suspend his licence.

Mockovak's licence was officially suspended Wednesday. He is not licensed to practise in Canada.

He is reported to have been released on $2-million bail.
