Investigators revealed Friday that a candle knocked over in the middle of the night caused a fire that killed two young brothers of the Nanoose First Nation last week.

RCMP spokesman Const. Gary O’Brien said that candles were being used for light and heat throughout the community on the night of Jan. 24 because a windstorm in the area had knocked out power to many homes.

One of the candles in the home where brothers Jordan, 9, and Devon Drake, 7 were sleeping was accidentally knocked onto a couch and started the fire, O’Brien said. They died in the fire and the uninsured home was destroyed.

Community efforts to help the families affected by the tragedy are ongoing.
