A trailer home and bus at Popeye’s Campground in Saanichton were destroyed in a blaze early this morning.
Area resident James Younger says he got a knock on his door around 2 a.m. Sunday from a neighbour.
“He said ‘Grab you camera, there’s a fire,’” said Younger, a photography enthusiast. They reached the small campground at 7591 Jimmy Rd. to find firefighters battling flames that engulfed the trailer home of a permanent resident and his neighbouring bus.
“The trailer and bus were burned up good,” Younger said, adding the man occasionally had campfires and lamps in that area – but he did not know what caused the fire.
The trailer’s owner had sustained minor burns when he tried to enter his burning home to find his dog – who had escaped and was walking around the scene when Younger arrived.
