It is interesting that the letter-writer suggests that the Green party’s decision to run a high-profile candidate against the NDP’s Murray Rankin in the upcoming federal election “fits right in with Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s dream of splitting the vote and winning re-election.”

In 2005, a non-confidence motion was introduced in the House of Commons by Conservative Leader Stephen Harper, seconded by NDP Leader Jack Layton, leading to the defeat of the minority Liberal government of Paul Martin. The defeat of the government, made possible by the NDP supporting the Conservatives in the vote of non-confidence, led to the election of Harper as prime minister of Canada.
