A pickup travelling north on Shelbourne Street knocked down a number of light standards before coming to a stop in a gas station parking lot at McKenzie Avenue on Friday night.

A 21-year-old University of Victoria student died Friday after he lost control of his truck on Shelbourne Street and crashed into a tree.

Police have not released the name of the victim. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

A truck travelling north on Shelbourne Street toward McKenzie Avenue lost control and crossed the centre line, hitting a series of light standards before coming to a stop against a tree in the Esso gas station parking lot, said Saanich police Sgt. Steve Eassie.

Witnesses told police that excessive speed appeared to be a factor.

“Thankfully, there were no other vehicles involved,” Eassie said.

No vehicles or pedestrians were in the intersection at the time.

The man was extricated from the vehicle and rushed to hospital. He has not been identified.

The truck is believed to have been coming from Cedar Hill Cross Road and began hitting poles near Garnet Road, police said.

A Saanich traffic analyst and forensic identification officers were on the scene, and several blocks of Shelbourne Street from Cedar Hill Cross Road to McKenzie Avenue were shut down for investigation.
