The driver and lone occupant of a vehicle was unhurt after it caught fire Sunday afternoon on the Trans-Canada Highway, near Helmcken Road.

The View Royal Fire Department was alerted just after 2 p.m. and had the blaze out quickly. The highway was shut down northbound for about 45 minutes.

Capt. Troy Mollin said firefighters could see heavy black smoke as they approached. “When we arrived the front end of the vehicle was fully involved.”

He said police closed the highway’s northbound lanes at the exit to Colwood.

Mollin said the vehicle appears to have had a mechanical or electrical issue.

He said firefighters appreciated the public’s patience while the closure was in effect.
