One person suffered minor injuries in a vehicle fire near downtown Victoria on Sunday afternoon.

Battalion Chief John Kirkendale said a man was inside a van near Pandora Avenue and Chambers Street when it caught fire shortly before 1 p.m.

“He did suffer some minor burns to his hands and ankles and face,” he said.

B.C. Ambulance took the man to hospital for further treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

The fire was quickly extinguished after Kirkendale and six other firefighters responded to the scene, he said.

The blackened van was towed away later in the afternoon, and cause of the fire is under investigation.

A dog that was in the vehicle at the time of the fire escaped unharmed.

On Monday, the firefighters’ union said in an online statement that the fire may have been caused by a poorly stored propane tank.

“This sad story is a cautionary tale to take proper care when using propane in confined spaces,” Victoria Firefighters Local 730 said on social media.

“Our heart goes out to the owner of the vehicle [as] losing so much at this time of year can not be easy.”
