The vehicles were impounded for seven days in both cases, although drivers with a second excessive-speeding offence within two years can get a 30-day impoundment under provincial rules.

A Comox Valley motorist lost his vehicle twice in four months after being nabbed by the same officer for excessive speeding in November and again in March.

Driving more than 40 km/h over the speed limit is deemed excessive speeding, which brings a minimum fine of $368 and a seven-day vehicle impoundment.

On Nov. 22, a Comox Valley RCMP traffic officer clocked the driver doing 112 km/h in a 60 km/h zone in a Mini Cooper about 3:50 p.m. on Headquarters Road.

Then on March 13 about 1 p.m., the same officer nabbed the driver for doing 106 km/h in a 60 km/h zone in a Pontiac Firebird on Veterans Memorial Parkway in Courtenay.

The vehicles were impounded for seven days in both cases, although drivers with a second excessive-speeding offence within two years can get a 30-day impoundment under provincial rules.

Any further offence within the two years can net the driver a 60-day impoundment.

Excessive speeders could also see an increase in their insurance rates, said Const. Monika Terragni.

Controlling your speed makes you better able to respond to unexpected situations on the road and can reduce the severity of a crash, she said.
