Boater rescued from burning vessel near Port McNeill

The lone person aboard a 50-foot vessel that caught fire Thursday morning in Broughton Strait, off Port McNeill, was brought to safety by one of several boats in the area.

A mayday was broadcast at 8:12 a.m. Thursday, and the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Victoria sent Port Hardy’s lifeboat to the scene.

The lone person aboard a 50-foot vessel that caught fire Thursday morning in Broughton Strait, off Port McNeill, was brought to safety by one of several boats in the area.

A mayday was broadcast at 8:12 a.m., and the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Victoria sent Port Hardy’s lifeboat to the scene.

The lifeboat joined other nearby vessels in the response.

No information was available on the condition of the person rescued.
