Candy is dandy, but lingerie's a lot more fun

Skip the predictable Valentine's Day chocolates.

And pass on the posies.

The love-themed day is a good time to get in touch with one's racier side, says Andrea Chartier, store manager at Agent Provocateur on Alberni Street in Vancouver.

"It's all about love, feelings, embracing lust," says Chartier, seated in the newly reopened shop, surrounded by undergarments -- some risque, some elegant, some demure.

And she adds: "[Lingerie] is much longer-lasting than chocolates or flowers."

But while it's relatively easy for women to buy themselves a little Valentine's treat such as a new bra or negligee, it's a little more complicated for men.

For instance, she says, size is key. "Look in her drawer," Chartier advises, nodding. A little pre-shopping snooping can go a long way toward successful lingerie gift-giving.

"Get a general idea for what sizes to look for."

Try to be realistic and be sure to ask a salesperson for help, she says. "If you know her dress size, we can typically guess," says Chartier.

Also, she says, when buying lingerie, one should consider what they think the recipient would actually like to wear.

If your sweetheart loves lighter hues such as pink or pale blue, Chartier says, look for something pastel.

Keep it simple, she says. And "think about hints that may have been left for you."

It's not hard to find something special, she says: "Walk around the store and see what jumps out at you."

And if underwear shopping just isn't your thing?

Consider anything from perfume, romance-themed books, games, robes, slips or mood-setting, scented candles.
