DALLAS - The Nasher Sculpture Center is marking its 10th anniversary this year by commissioning 10 sculptures to be placed throughout Dallas.
Officials of the museum announced Wednesday that the exhibition, called "Nasher XChange," will be in place from Oct. 19 through Feb. 16, 2014. The museum marks its 10th anniversary on Oct. 20.
Museum Director Jeremy Strick says the project helps put art "into the hands, hearts and minds of the citizens of Dallas."
"Each of these artists was inspired by different geographical, cultural, social, historical, environmental and esthetic settings in Dallas," he said. "Their works will represent radically disparate approaches to working in various locales that make up our great city."
He said the works will be revealed in the coming months.
Alfredo Jaar of New York City is among the artists chosen to create a sculpture for the exhibit. "This is a very important initiative because we go to the audience," Jaar said.
"If we establish a nice dialogue maybe then they will come to the institution. So this is really about expanding the audience for contemporary art," he said.
Also chosen to design a work was the Good/Bad Art Collective of Denton. Martin Iles, director of the group of artists, said their work is very much about involving the spectator in the work. For instance, they once rebuilt their gallery inside another gallery and turned it into a roller skating rink.
"This is very much about bringing art to people, and we very much brought people to art and turned people into art and made them part of the process so it seems like a natural fit," he said.
He said he's excited about the exhibition. "As a concept it seems super exciting, very ambitious and very giving," he said.
The Nasher Sculpture Center, located in the Dallas Arts District in downtown, showcases the modern and contemporary sculpture collection of Raymond and Patsy Nasher. Raymond Nasher, a real estate developer, died in 2007 at the age of 85. Patsy died at the age of 59 in 1988.
