The weekend gets underway early on Friday with a 7 p.m. set by San Francisco's Monophonics.
It's no surprise Mono-phonics record for Bay Area record label Ubiquity, one of the forerunners in vintage soul sounds.
The six-piece group specializes in psychedelic soul and heavy funk, a mix that sounds like it was ripped straight from a jam session between the Meters, the Dap Kings and Otis Redding.
The group, which originally formed in 2005 as an instrumental ensemble, returns to the Upstairs Cabaret, the site of its coming-out-party in June at the TD Victoria International JazzFest.
Monophonics plays with The New Souls at #15 Bastion Sq. Tickets are $10 at the door.
