The symposium First Nations, Land and James Douglas: Indigenous and Treaty Rights in the Colonies of Vancouver Island and British Columbia, 1849-1864, is being held at the Songhees Wellness Centre in Esquimalt.

The symposium is one of four signature events organized by the University of Victoria to mark Canada’s 150 anniversary of Confederation.

The other three:

• Indigenous Peoples’ Land Rights and the Roles of Ethnoecology and Ethnobotany, May 2-5, with keynote speakers John Ralston Saul and Val Napoleon.
The symposium will examine the trends and potential for recognizing land use and occupancy as reflections of indigenous peoples’ traditional ecological knowledge, and their fundamental and longstanding connections to the plants and habitats of their homelands.

• Forgotten Corridors: Global Displacement and the Politics of Engagement, May 15-18, with keynote speakers Jyoti Sanghera, Romola Sanyal and Sheila Watt-Cloutier
Researchers, policy makers and activists from diverse disciplines and regions will convene to discuss the parameters of global displacement, especially the experiences of those taking routes less travelled.

• Victoria Forum: Canadian Perspectives on Diversity and Inclusion at Home and Abroad, Nov. 17-19.

This conference will bring together leaders, influencers and academics to discuss Canada’s role in pluralism, at home and on the global stage. Themes include economics of diversity, social inclusion, sustainability, indigenous peoples, business leadership and inclusive development.
