Overcrowding forces elective surgeries, endoscopies to be postponed in Regina

The Canadian Press / Times Colonist
January 9, 2013

REGINA - Overcrowding is forcing the Regina health region to postpone 19 elective surgeries and 23 endoscopies this week.

The region says the Regina General Hospital has been close to 130 per cent capacity, while the city's second hospital, the Pasqua, has been near 110 per cent capacity.

It says the procedures had to be cancelled to focus resources on emergency room patients and current patients in the hospitals.

The region says the surgeries and procedures will be rescheduled on a priority basis as soon as possible.

It says there's no one cause of the current overcapacity situation.

The status of both hospitals will be reviewed Friday to determine whether elective surgeries and procedures will be postponed next week too.

The latest postponement comes after some elective surgeries and non-surgical elective procedures were cancelled at both Regina hospitals last month because of overcrowding.
