Brr! It’s probably still a little early to be breaking out those winter parkas, but Sunday brought record-low temperatures to several parts of Greater Victoria.

Record lows for an Aug. 29 were set at Esquimalt Harbour, Hartland landfill and the University of Victoria.

Granted, Environment Canada has recorded temperatures at those locations only since the 1990s. Still, at Gonzales Point, where temperatures have been recorded since 1973, the 9.7-degree C low on Sunday was enough to break the record of 11.1, set in 1973.

At Victoria International Airport, where Environment Canada has been recording temperatures since 1940, a record low of 5.6 degrees set in 1969 held strong against a low on Sunday of 6.7 degrees.

Further up the Island, the low of 5.3 degrees in Port Alberni was just cold enough to break the record of 5.7 degrees set in 1993.

The cooler weather is forecasted to continue into this week, along with some rain. Although Environment Canada is forecasting Monday to have a mix of sun and cloud, there is a 70 per cent chance of showers Tuesday and Wednesday.
