No charges will be laid against Bear Mountain developer Len Barrie after a lengthy RCMP investigation.

“Crown has not approved any criminal charges as a result of the police investigation into aspects of the Bear Mountain development,” Neil MacKenzie, communications counsel with the Crown prosecutor’s office, said Tuesday.

Because there are no charges, MacKenzie said he could not go into details of the police investigation or evidence reviewed. “The investigation was in connection with Mr. Barrie’s involvement in the development and the management and handling of some of the funds connected to it.”

The criminal justice branch decided late last year that there was not a substantial likelihood of conviction, he said.

Police confirmed in early 2011 an investigation was underway following a complaint from an investor in the Bear Mountain development. RCMP said at the time they began in 2010 looking into issues raised by former NHL goaltender Sean Burke, who spoke out publicly against fellow former NHL player Barrie. Burke, who invested $600,000, was among 18 players who put a total of $12 million into the project.

Bear Mountain Resort was acquired for an undisclosed price late last year by Ecoasis Developments.
