The fog that grounded some flights and delayed others in recent days will likely continue in the coming days, Environment Canada said Saturday.
The weather office said a ridge of high pressure has stalled over the B.C. coast with warmer air trapping moisture below.
“The weak October sun may burn through some of the fog and cloud allowing for some brief sunny breaks in the afternoons,” the office said in a special statement for coastal areas including Greater Victoria, the Southern Gulf Islands, East Vancouver Island and Metro Vancouver.
The fog may be less extensive during the week if the wind pattern changes.
A number of flights out of Victoria were cancelled early Saturday, but regular traffic resumed later in the day.
Fog also forced the cancellation and delay of some Friday flights, said Victoria Airport Authority spokesman Terry Stewart.
“It’s tough out there, it’s thicker than pea soup,” Stewart said Friday.
Stewart advised travellers to check victoriaairport.com and with their airline for up-to-date flight information.
Fog patches were reported on a number of Island roads, including the Pat Bay Highway, Highway 14 between Colwood and Port Renfrew, the Malahat and Highways 1 and 1A around Campbell River.
The fog was expected to form again on Saturday night, dissipating late Sunday morning.
Sunday’s forecast calls for clouds and a high of 12°C.
