The many bluegrass fans in the area will be excited to hear that Jeff Scroggins and Colorado are performing Thursday at Hermann’s Jazz Club.

Modern-day bluegrass performers rarely come this decorated, which should make for quite the stringed racket when the quintet appears at what is one of the truly excellent venues in town next week.

Here’s the impressive tale of the tape where the Colorado-based group is concerned: Bandleader and group namesake Jeff Scroggins is the previous winner of the National Bluegrass Banjo Championship; his son, Tristin, who is just 19, is a two-time state mandolin championship in both New Mexico and Arizona, while singer Greg Blake is a decorated vocalist and guitarist.

The show is a presentation of the Victoria Bluegrass Association and the Sooke River Bluegrass Festival. Scroggins and Colorado will be joined at the show by local act the Garrett Thompson Band.

Showtime is 7:30 p.m., with doors at 5:30. Tickets are $20 at brownpapertickets.com, or $25 at the door.

Hermann’s Jazz Club is located at 753 View St.

Vancouver-bred, Brooklyn-based electro-pop duo Bob Moses is returning to Canada later this year following a string of successful performances that included a stop at April’s vaunted Coachella festival.

The group is booked to perform Sept. 4 at Distrikt nightclub in the Strathcona Hotel, tickets for which should be a hot commodity. Opening act is Harrison Brome.

Bob Moses — which combines the talents of Tom Howie and Jimmy Vallance — has been riding a wave since the 2015 release of Days Gone By, their debut on Domino Records. The group was hand-picked by Ellen DeGeneres to appear on her daytime talk show earlier this year.

Tickets are $15 at thisisblueprint.com, Lyle’s Place, 770 Yates St., and the Strathcona Hotel front desk.

Distrikt is located at 919 Douglas St.

File this one under very, very, interesting.

Dave “Smoota” Smith — a touring instrumentalist with TV On the Radio since 2011 — is bringing his weird and wacky solo project to the Copper Owl on June 8. Exactly what that entails remains to be seen, however. Smoota has been described as a cross between Barry White and Barry Gibb, so the possibilities are endless.

Tickets are $10 at the door. Opening act is Whitehorse-based musician Jona Barr, otherwise known as Old Cabin.

Copper Owl is located at 1900 Douglas St., next to Paul’s Motor Inn.

Bastions of the local blues community are staging a fundraiser at Distrikt nightclub next month for photographer Lani Sanders, who recently lost all her camera gear when it was stolen from her vehicle.

The event, Friends Helping Friends, features sets from Telstarr, the Deb Rhymer Band, Uncle Wiggly’s Hot Shoes Blues Band, Don Peterson and The Push Band, and the Jason Buie Band. The fundraiser gets underway June 3 at 6 p.m., with doors at 5:30. Tickets are $15 at Lyle’s Place, 770 Yates St., and the Strathcona Hotel.

Distrikt is located at 919 Douglas St.

Nanaimo indie rockers Maverick Cinema have a round of upcoming tour dates on their itinerary, including four Vancouver Island stops next month.

The group is on the road in support of its debut EP, Sanctuary, which arrived May 13. Upcoming dates from singer-guitarist Marshal Dillabough, drummer Cam Harper, bassist Matt Lineker, and guitarist Spencer Hiemstra include stops in Duncan (June 8, Garage Showroom), Ucluelet (June 9, The Navy Arms Clubhouse), Victoria (June 10, Copper Owl), and Nanaimo (June 11, The Vault).

Maverick Cinema will also appear July 23 at the Rock of the Woods Festival in the Cowichan Valley.

Nanaimo native Allison Crowe has a new double album available for purchase, in addition to web-based video album.

Introducing/Heirs + Grievances, a combination live and studio set, is available for $8 through her website, allisoncrowe.com.

Crowe, now based in Corner Brooke, Nfld., will spend the summer as the musical director for Theatre Newfoundland’s stage production Newfoundland Vinyl. Crowe — who appeared as a lounge singer in the 2013 Superman reboot Man of Steel — will also join the cast for performances running June 11-Sept. 2.

Crowe is releasing a series of videos through her channel on Vimeo to accompany all 13 songs from Heirs + Grievances. The 13th and final video in the series, which is currently six deep, will appear on June 3 on Vimeo.
