Victoria singer Adonis Puentes has soared into the Grammy spotlight.
The album Jose Rizo's Mongorama, showcasing Puentes as lead vocalist, is nominated in the category of best tropical latin album at the 2012 Grammy Awards.
"I'm super excited," said Puentes, 37, who divides his time between Victoria and Los Angeles.
"It's one of the most beautiful things that has happened."
Mongorama is a ninepiece Latin-jazz ensemble. Formed by American radio host Jose Rizo, the Los Angeles band pays tribute to the music of late AfroCuban percussionist Mongo Santamaria.
"It's been a long journey, getting a nomination like this, with such an amazing group of musicians. This is a confirmation . I'm following my destiny," Puentes said Wednesday.
The singer will attend the 54th Grammy Awards ceremony, taking place Feb. 12 at Staples Centre in Los Angeles.
Puentes moved to Canada in 1998 from his home country of Cuba. He composes and sings internationally, specializing in Cuban music with a contemporary flavour.
His nomination follows the 2010 Grammy win of his brother, Alex Cuba, for best new artist. Cuba was also nominated for a Grammy last year in the category of Best Latin Pop Album.
The brothers grew up in the Cuban city of Artemisa, west of Havana, playing traditional son music.
