Valentine's Day movies

 

These movies don't all take place during Valentine's Day, but they all tell their own unique little love stories that are perfect for starry-eyed couples this time of year. Read on for some of the best romantic movies to watch with your partner this evening.

Say Anything - John Cusack is a sucker in so many movies he’s in. He’s constantly chasing after girls who are well out of his league but he’s just so darn cute. His first such role came here, playing Lloyd Dobler, a medium achiever who falls in love with the class valedictorian, played by Ione Skye. No one can forget him raising a boombox over his head playing Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes” in a last-ditch attempt to make her love him.

Serendipity - A couple played by John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale leaves their future to chance, relying only on the faith that they might someday meet again and still find themselves in love.
The English Patient - Fans of Seinfeld will know they have to love this movie or be fired. Adapted from Michael Ondaatje’s novel, it tells of a wounded mapmaker who relates to his nurse a fateful love affair he had during the war. See it now or risk losing your job.
The Notebook - An elderly man arrives in a care home and relates to a woman with memory loss the story of two young lovers who, separated for years, still somehow found themselves back together. Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams play the young lovers and James Garner plays the role of the elderly man.
The Princess Bride - An old man relates to his sick, cynical grandson a “kissing book,” the romantic-yet-funny story of farmboy Westley (Cary Elwes) who falls in love with Princess Buttercup (Robin Wright), a royal daughter forced to marry Prince Humperdinck (Chris Sarandon), a man she doesn’t love. But Westley transcends death just to be with her.
Titanic - Slated for a 3D release in April of this year, James Cameron’s Titanic places Leonardo DiCaprio in yet another role as a star-crossed lover, a humble artist in love with Rose (Kate Winslet), a woman from a higher class.
West Side Story - An adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, this is the filmic version of Jerome Robbins’s stage play, which translates the action to the streets of New York and recasts the Montagues and the Capulets as the Jets and the Sharks, rival gangs who play out ethnic tensions even as one of each of their crew falls in love with the other.
When Harry Met Sally - Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan play friends who’ve known each other for years, and while an attraction develops between both of them, they’re both worried that sex could ruin their friendship. Remembered mainly for a classic scene in which Ryan fakes an orgasm at Katz’s Delicatessen.
While You Were Sleeping - Sandra Bullock plays a ticket-collector who saves a man’s life and becomes a part of his family. But there’s a kicker: she’s really in love with his brother Jack, played by Bill Pullman. – screenshot, via sinebot.com
A Walk to Remember - Sappy little teen romance casts Shane West as a popular jock and Mandy Moore as the cherubic young girl who has to work with him as he does community service, which includes starring in the school play. Neither expected to fall in love, but it happens.
Breathless - By no means a conventional love story, this Jean-Luc Godard New Wave classic stars Jean-Paul Belmondo as a car thief who kills a policeman and tries to convince a beautiful young American, played by Jean Seberg, to run away with him to Italy.
Black Orpheus - Marcel Camus’s translation of the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice takes the action to Rio de Janeiro during Carnival. An infectious bossa nova beat plays throughout the film and provides background for a sweet, innocent love story about two young people and an ill-fated love.
Jules and Jim - Jean-Luc Godard’s romance is about a love triangle that begins before World War I. Jules and Jim are friends in love with Catherine. Catherine marries Jules, and after the war, she falls in love with Jim.
William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet - Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 of the famous play cast a young Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes as the star-crossed lovers and set the film in modern times, switching swords for guns and Verona for a California beach community. The film is manic and maddening, but its ending does the play justice.
Love Story - “Love means never having to say you're sorry.” And neither Ryan O’Neal nor Ali MacGraw had to apologize for this one, a classic story about two Harvard students who fall in love despite his parents’ wishes.
