Saanich teen charged with murdering father appears, mother by his side

A Saanich teen, charged with second-degree murder in connection with the stabbing death of his father, appeared by video in provincial youth court today, his mother by his side.

Defence lawyer Dale Marshall, who is representing the 17-year-old Spectrum Community School student, asked for the case to be adjourned until Friday morning to give him time to meet with his client and to review disclosure material provided by the Crown.

Marshall said orders — such as a psychiatric assessment to determine whether the youth is fit to stand trial — may be requested of the court on Friday morning.

Marshall told the youth, who cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, that he would come out to talk to him at the youth custody centre that afternoon.

Marshall said he had met with the youth's mother on Monday night for the first time.
