An elderly woman injured in a Saanich apartment fire has died.

The woman, who was in her 80s, suffered burns and smoke inhalation in a fire at her third-floor apartment at 4490 Chatterton Way.

The fire, which started in the bedroom around noon on Sunday, was extinguished by the building’s sprinkler system before Saanich firefighters arrived, said Battalion Chief Joe Zsidi.

Firefighters from two Saanich fire halls converged on the site and rescued the woman. She died overnight in hospital, Zsidi said.

Fire inspectors are investigating whether the woman suffered a medical emergency just prior to the fire.

Saanich police and B.C. Coroners Service are investigating. The woman’s name has not been released.
