Maple tapping and syrup-making has enjoyed a surge in popularity on Vancouver Island, and the Bigleaf Maple Syrup Festival at the B.C. Forest Discovery Centre, 2892 Drinkwater Rd. in Duncan, is scheduled for Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The event features mini-workshops from the Sapsuckers, a group of local maple syrup producers. Visitors will get tips on tapping trees and learn about syrup-making while socializing around the boiling sap evaporator. Chef Bill Jones will give a maple cooking demonstration at noon, and there is a maple syrup competition judged by Jones and fellow chef Mara Jernigan.
There are train rides every half hour, musical entertainment by Ed Peekeekoot, children's crafts, and a chance to taste fresh maple syrup. Admission is $5 including train rides. call 1-250-715-1113 for more information.
