A family home in Courtenay has been destroyed has been destroyed in an overnight fire.

The residence at 1830 Urquhart Avenue appears to be a total loss but its two occupants escaped without injury prior to the arrival of firefighters, the RCMP said today. They do not yet have the exact time of the start of the fire.

The cause of the fire “does not appear to be foul play,” said Comox Valley RCMP spokeswoman Const. Nicole Hall.

The Comox Valley Acting Fire Chief Kurt MacDonald was on scene along with a fire investigator. The RCMP’s arson investigator will also help to determine the cause.

A preliminary investigation points to an improperly discarded cigarette in the front porch area as a possible cause of the blaze, Hall said.
