Oak Bay police issued an alert Friday after receiving two reports of cougar sightings.
The big cat was spotted about 8 a.m. in the area of Linkleas Avenue and Byng Street, near Victoria Golf Club.
There have been four calls about cougar sightings in the past few days.
Police and a conservation officer could not find the animal. If there is a cougar, the conservation officer said, it is likely active at night and will try to avoid being seen during the day.
Children are advised to walk in small groups on sidewalks and to avoid wooded paths and similar areas. People should keep an eye on their pets, as well, police said.
