Sidney/North Saanich RCMP are looking for a motorcyclist who blew past a speed trap at more than 220 kilometres an hour.

About 3:30 p.m. on April 6, a Mountie was using a speed-reader on cars heading north on the Pat Bay Highway near Amity Road.

The officer saw a motorcyclist on a red or orange sport bike coming toward him travelling at least 220 km/h in a 90 km/h zone, police said.

The motorcyclist slowed down, flipped up his visor, then flipped it back down and sped off. The bike was not located and the officer could not get a licence plate number, said RCMP spokeswoman Cpl. Erin Fraser.

“It’s extremely concerning,” Fraser said. “[Motorcyclists are] sitting on a few hundred pounds of steel or metal. That’s essentially a weapon.

“It can cause a lot of damage, especially to the rider who is very vulnerable, not being protected. At that speed, you’ve got your life in your hands,” Fraser said.

Anyone who might have witnessed the driver speeding or knows his or her identity is asked to call Sidney/North Saanich RCMP at 250-656-3931 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

In 2012, a YouTube video of a motorcyclist hitting almost 300 km/h on the Trans-Canada Highway went viral, prompting Saanich police to seize the sport bike and charge Randy Scott, 27, with dangerous driving. Scott was eventually acquitted.
