Honda introduced a new Odyssey minivan at the Chicago Auto Show Wednesday, pointing to the design direction for the next generation Honda Odyssey that will hit showrooms in North America this fall.

While still called a concept, the new Odyssey is expected to look very similar to the model just introduced since Honda typically introduces its new models as concepts first, allowing it to make minor adjustments based on feedback before the model goes into production.

Honda says the new Odyssey dramatically departs from conventional minivan styling with its lower and wide stance — highlighted by a “lightning-bolt” beltline that further distinguishes the van's profile. Compared to the current Odyssey, the new version has a slightly lower roofline, wider stance and better aerodynamics that help increase fuel economy. The interior will also be substantially upgraded to make for more space inside.

"The Odyssey established its reputation by providing Canadian families with what they most want in a minivan – great functionality, an emphasis on safety, convenience and fuel efficiency,” according to Jerry Chenkin, executive vice president of Honda Canada Inc. “Odyssey has gained a high degree of popularity with its fun-to-drive and dynamic nature. The next-generation Odyssey promises to take these strengths to a higher level, while adding more style and personality.”

The front of the new Odyssey is steeply raked and that lightning-bolt beltline breaks up the boxy look of most minivans. Aggressive body-to-wheel proportions reduce the perception of vertical height common to most minivan designs.

Currently in its third generation, the fourth generation Odyssey will keep its "3rd-Row Magic Seat" and V-6 engine with available three-mode variable cylinder management. Both the concept and production vehicles, along with all development activity for the 2011 Odyssey, are being designed at Honda R&D Americas in Torrance, California, and Raymond, Ohio.
