General Motors’ goal was to develop the Cadillac brand to be the very best. The first of the new breed will be the XTS, a full-sized sedan that takes aim at the German-dominated luxury market.

The XTS follows the CTS’s angular style but with softer edges — it makes for a sexy-looking sedan. Beneath the brightwork beats a 300-horsepower V6 that powers all four wheels through a Haldex AWD system and a six-speed automatic transmission. Body motion is controlled by Cadillac’s Magnetic Ride Control suspension. This promises a ride as comfortable as it will be nimble, GM says.

And Cadillac is serious about performance — the XTS comes with Brembo brakes. The XTS will also launch Cadillac’s CUE infotainment system, an iPod-like interface that integrates the navigation, media and phone functions in a simple format that features a zoom-in function.

The XTS goes on sale in the spring as a 2013 model.
