A minor fire in a faulty car battery caused the 7 p.m. sailing of the Spirit of British Columbia to return to the Tsawwassen terminal Saturday, which ended up putting the ferry more than 70 minutes off schedule.

The fire was quickly put out with an on-board extinguisher.

“They were only 10 minutes out of Tsawwassen, having just left, so they turned around and went back,” said B.C. Ferries spokesman Darin Guenette. The Delta Fire Department was called and the car was removed from the vessel.

A woman and two dogs who were in the car got out safely.
