The Four Mile House Pub in View Royal starts pulling pints of its own beer today.

The pub, operated in the historic roadhouse by the Haymes family since the early 1980s, completed construction of a 2,500-square-foot brewery on its premises and now offers six of its brews at the bar.

It is Greater Victoria’s fifth brewpub after Spinnakers, Swans, Canoe and Moon Under Water.

Four Mile’s version is viewer-friendly.

The brewery is designed as a visual experience for customers. Through panes of glass, you can watch small batches of unfiltered beer in an open fermentation process, witnessing the yeast working its magic.

“In terms of the nuts and bolts, this has been in the works for a year and a half, but it was always the original plan when the pub opened to incorporate a microbrewery,” said Graham Haymes.

Four Mile Brewing will offer beer on tap at the pub and incorporate their brew into the food menu. It will also provide a “growler” filling station and package beer for retail sale at its liquor store at Admiral’s Walk and other locations.

It may have taken a while, but Haymes noted the time is right to introduce it now.

“The market for craft beer is growing rapidly,” said Haymes. “There’s huge demand, especially for Island products ... as long as the product is good. If you’re making great beer and the packaging is good, a lot of people are looking to carry it and a lot of consumers are looking to try stuff locally made.”

The brewers are Alan Pugsley and Doug White.

Four Mile Brewery will also be offering small-batch seasonal and limited releases throughout the year.
