The Victoria high-tech sector has scoured its labs, server rooms and gaming studios to come up with the finalists for the 12th annual Victoria Advanced Technology Council’s awards.

This year, 38 companies and individuals have been named as finalists in nine categories. The awards will be handed out at a gala evening June 20 at the Victoria Conference Centre.

VIATeC has also announced that Clayton Stark, who most recently established gaming studio Kixeye in Victoria, will receive the Colin Lennox Award for Technology Champion, while the VIATeC Member of the Year award will go to RaceRocks 3D, who recently garnered extra-worldly attention by producing VIATeC’s video message to Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield, commander of the International Space Station.

This year’s Education Champion award goes to David Shortreed, an elementary school teacher from School District 61.

The award finalists were pulled from a record 109 nominations.

“We’re thrilled to see the technology awards move from strength to strength,” said VIATeC executive director Dan Gunn. “This is the 12th anniversary of the awards, and interest remains very high — not only in nominating the innovative individuals and companies who make our sector strong, but in attending the awards to connect with the movers, shakers, doers and makers in Victoria’s imagination economy.”

The awards celebrate the achievements of technology companies responsible for making Greater Victoria the fastest growing technology region in B.C. And this year VIATeC is adding a new award to the mix.

“With the success of Accelerate Tectoria, Victoria’s start-up incubator, this year we have introduced a new category: Start-up of the Year,” said Gunn. “Each of those finalists will make a short video pitch to the audience at the awards, just like they do in front of investors. The audience will vote for the winner.”

The VIATeC award show, which has made a name for itself over the years by offering an often irreverent and sometimes entertaining evening that celebrates the industry, will once again draw 600 technology community members, investors, government decision-makers, academics and media from as far afield as Ottawa, San Francisco, Portland, Boulder and Vancouver.

Tickets are still available at www.viatecawards.com.
