Victoria residents, UVic among startup contest regional winners

Two Victoria residents and the University of Victoria are among Wednesday’s winners of Startup Canada’s regional awards.

Dan Gunn, executive director of the Victoria Advanced Technology Council, Brent Mainprize, professor at the UVic Gustavson School of Business and the university itself were all named in a list of 11 winners who will later be pitted against the best from Canada’s regions to determine national winners.

Gunn was named the Entrepreneurship Ecosystem Builder of the Year, awarded to a non-profit group that demonstrates both innovative approaches and the largest impact in helping entrepreneurs and startups succeed.

Mainprize was named the Entrepreneurship Educator of the Year, while UVic was named the Most Entrepreneurial Post-Secondary Institution.

Startup Canada is a national, volunteer-run organization that aims to enhance the nation’s competitiveness and prosperity through entrepreneurship.

Other B.C. winners include Grow Conference, Start-up PG, Hootsuite and Growlab.— Times Colonist
