A new Canadian Trivia: Family Edition board game is packed with more than 2,000 questions collected by creator David Manga, founder of Saanich-based Outset Media.
A sample junior-level question: What monster is said to live in Okanagan Lake?
Answer: Ogopogo.
Here’s an expert-level question: What NHL team did Hap Day coach to five Stanley Cup victories?
Answer: Toronto Maple Leafs.
Although the game has its origins in the All Canadian Trivia Board Game, launched by Manga almost 16 years ago, this is a different game. It’s played differently, the majority of questions are new, and this time it’s made for families. The first game was aimed at adults.
It needed to be updated.
The original game asked what was the name of Canada’s largest private retailer? Today, the T. Eaton Co.’s stores are long gone from Canada’s retail landscape.
In the new game, players get quizzed on geography, history, arts and general topics, which include sports. One side of the question card is suited for adults, the other for youngsters.
Players learn about Canada, but “first and foremast, it is supposed to be fun,” Manga said.
A total of 9,813 sales have been tallied so far, Manga said. The game has a suggested retail price of $29.99.
Other Trivia game versions have come out — a 10th edition, Millennium edition and a French edition.
Board and card games are for players who want interaction with each other, he said. They are nothing like computer games. “We haven’t found that technology has impacted us.”
Outset produces a variety of products, including the Professor Noggin’s card games and the Cobble Hill Puzzle Co. It has been recognized as Supplier of the Year by Neighbourhood Toy Stores of Canada, a network of specialty toy store retailers and suppliers. Sales are steady, with puzzles being particularly strong, he said.

The game can also be purchased at outlets such as Lion’s Den Games Room, Timeless Toys, Bolen Books, Buddies Toy Store and Seeing Is Believing.
