Wi-LAN sues RIM in U.S. court; claims infringement of Bluetooth patent

OTTAWA - Wi-LAN Inc. (TSX:WIN) begun litigation against Research in Motion Ltd. (TSX:RIM) alleging patent infringement.

The case, launched the Southern District of Florida, alleges infringement of U.S. Patent No. 6,260,168 related to Bluetooth technologies.

The Ottawa-based patent-licensing firm did not disclose any other details in its brief announcement Tuesday, including what remedies were being sought.

Founded in 1992, Wi-LAN has licensed its intellectual property to more than 260 companies worldwide that sell a wide range communication and consumer electronics products including 3G and 4G handsets, Wi-Fi-enabled laptops, Wi-Fi and broadband routers, xDSL infrastructure equipment, cellular base stations and digital TV receivers.
