A planned increase in Internet plan rates has angered some customers of Shaw Cable.

An online forum at Shaw.ca had 138 posts Monday afternoon, with many commenters decrying what they see as Shaw sneaking a rate increase onto bills in the New Year. Some suggested a switch to a competitor may be part of their new-year resolutions.

A message from Shaw said effective Jan. 1 the company is increasing regular monthly rates on all Internet plans.

The amount of the price increase will vary, depending on the package of services involved.

In its message to customers, Shaw said it is increasing rates “to support continued investment in building and supporting the Internet experience you need now and in the future.”

Use of the Internet in Canada is increasing, with the average Canadian household running 10 Wi-Fi devices, leading to heavier traffic on Internet services provided by Shaw, the company said.

“By 2018, Internet traffic is estimated to triple,” Shaw said.

Shaw said its customers are being told about how much their Internet rates will increase through messages on their bills..
