Victoria’s Capital Iron will receive the Family Enterprise of the Year Achievement Award from the Canadian Association of Family Enterprise on May 22 in Vancouver.

Owned and managed by the Black family, Capital Iron started as a small scrap metal business. Today, a general store fills the company’s three-storey 1900 Store St. heritage building. Merchandise includes home decor, hardware, clothing, camping equipment, and gardening supplies.

A new Capital Iron outlet has just opened on the Langford Parkway. The company has another store in Sidney.

Every year, between five and 10 per cent of profits are donated to charitable causes.

“The Capital Iron family is thrilled and honoured to be this year’s recipient [of the award],” said company president Mike Black. “There is a long list of distinguished winners and we are excited to be included in that number.”

Marine shuttle to ferry cruise ship visitors

A 40-passenger marine shuttle will help transport cruise ship passengers and crew between Ogden Point and the Steamship Terminal float on the lower causeway.

Victoria Harbour Ferry crew will operate the vessel, called Linda Mae, during its 30-minute trip. Passengers will hear a narrative about the local area, the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority said.

Passenger costs are still being finalized.

The marine shuttle is a pilot project to help reduce road traffic during the cruise ship season. Local residents have complained about busy roads, noise, and emissions from buses serving cruise ships.

The Wilson’s Transportation bus shuttle service returns this year.

The first cruise ship of the season, the Zaandam, is scheduled for May 1.

Change coming to Thrifty Foods

Shoppers curious about what’s happening behind the curtain at Thrifty Foods’ Admirals Walk store will have to wait a few more weeks before all is revealed.

The company did confirm it is doing a major refit of the store’s bakery as it takes that department in a new direction.

Spokesman Ralf Mundel would only say the new concept will be impressive and worth the wait.
