Victoria’s tech sector is casting around to find its best and brightest for 2016.

The Victoria Innovation, Advanced Technology and Entrepreneurship Council has opened nominations for the 2016 VIATEC Technology Awards, which will be held at the Victoria Conference Centre June 24.

The deadline to nominate companies and individuals is April 27 at 4 p.m.

The awards are billed as a means of increasing a company’s profile with local media, policy makers. and their peers, which can translate into making it easier to hire, find customers and raise investment.

This year, the awards have added two new technology company of the year awards to be able to recognize companies in three size categories.

“Given the broad range of established technology companies we have in Greater Victoria, we have added to the technology company of the year category,” said VIATEC chief executive Dan Gunn. “This change will allow us to recognize more of the deserving companies and allow companies of all sizes to stand among their peers.”

There are 13 award categories, 11 of which are open for nominations, while VIATEC selects the winners of the VIATEC Member of the Year and the Colin Lennox Award for Technology Champion.

Need a new sign?

Urban Sign is once again inviting Greater Victoria businesses and organizations to enter a contest for a chance to win $10,000 in new signage.

It’s the second year for the contest, which was won last year by Our Place Society.

“We are really looking to acknowledge those small businesses that have demonstrated they’re committed to community development and progressive business practices” said Urban Sign owner Jeff Furneaux. “We know better than anyone that new signage can have a dramatic impact on brand exposure, and we’re excited to contribute something meaningful like this again to the right group of people."

To enter, companies should go to Urban Sign’s website (www.urbansign.ca/contest/) and submit name, contact details and a brief statement outlining how they contribute to their community, and how they feel their organization is progressive.

The entrant garnering the most votes from the community will win a grand prize of $7,500 in signage and the opportunity to revamp the look and feel of their storefront. There are smaller packages offered for second and third prize. The contest opens April 12, and a winner will be announced at the end of May.
